Artist Statement

Diana Capstick is an artist who works across a range of media and visual languages, from three-dimensional sculpture to drawing and painting. Her current practice is entitled ‘Art on the Edge’. Some of the artworks can be described as expressive commentary, largely centred on current affairs themes that dominate the news at any given time; The Russian War and The Coronavirus Pandemic being typical examples, often created as grotesque, thought provoking caricatures. The human figure regularly features in her work,
musicians being a typical example. She also produces abstract compositions based on the environment and the natural world.

Her work is created by a combination of subtle and vigorous mark making.
Capstick explains her practice and thought processes related to producing these artworks: ‘Starting from the first idea, the image is created after an intense dialogue between myself and the subject.
During the process, the image will undergo a series of transformations as I apply intuition. Often, gestural movement will dominate the entire rhythm of the artwork. I want the finished piece to radiate the energy, dynamics and spontaneity of my thoughts, along with the emotional responses I experience from the subject.
